Consortiumnews.com's Home Stretch

By Robert Parry
August 9, 2007

We’re trying to wrap up our mid-year fundraiser, but we’re still about $10,000 short of our goal. So here are some reasons why it’s important to help us:

Perhaps the biggest threat to the American Republic has come from the disinformation, propaganda and false historical narratives that are fed to the American people through the national media.

This “perception management” – as the neocons like to call it – has tricked many Americans into supporting misguided policies and left many others paralyzed by confusion.

It is hard to imagine a President George W. Bush if not for the lies spread in the media about Al Gore in Campaign 2000; it is difficult to comprehend the catastrophe in Iraq if not for the stoking of war fever in 2002-03; even today, the Democrats keep caving in out of fear of media attacks on their patriotism.

Since our founding in 1995, Consortiumnews.com’s idea has been to build levees of fact and truth to hold back this flood of propaganda and deception. We believe that reliable information is crucial to stop the erosion of democracy and the destruction of rational discourse.

Over the past dozen years, our Web site has done what it could, but we could have done much more – if we had stronger financial backing.

Just in the past few weeks, we have demonstrated what can be done even with limited resources, offering in-depth reporting and analysis on key issues, from the continued selling of the Iraq War to violations of U.S. constitutional rights to the argument for a Bush-Cheney impeachment.

Besides our own articles, we have been working with Ray McGovern and his fellow patriotic former U.S. intelligence officers who have been among the key whistleblowers regarding the Bush administration’s abuse of intelligence analysis. [See, for instance, “Dangers of a Cornered George Bush” and “John Conyers Is No Martin Luther King.”]

We also have just published a new investigative article on another troubling chapter of Bush’s foreign policy, “Bush, Colombia & Narco-Politics” by journalist Andres Cala.

But none of this would be possible without the support of our readers. So, if you haven’t done so yet, please consider taking one of these two options for helping us reach our mid-year fundraising goal of $25,000:

One, you can buy a copy of our important new book, Neck Deep: The Disastrous Presidency of George W. Bush, through the publisher's Web site at http://www.neckdeepbook.com. For each purchase, $5 will be rebated to Consortiumnews.com.

Or, you can make a tax-deductible donation. For donations of $100, we will send you an autographed gift copy of Neck Deep in paperback. For a donation of $150 or more, we will send the hard cover version.

You can make your tax-deductible donation, either by a credit card online or by mailing a check to: Consortium for Independent Journalism (CIJ); Suite 102-231; 2200 Wilson Blvd.; Arlington, VA 22201. For readers wanting to use PayPal, you can address contributions to our account, which is named “[email protected].”

Thanks so much for your support.

Robert Parry, Editor
