Evaluating the Gaza War

By TheRealNews.com
January 6, 2009

As Israel's military operation in Gaza continues, analyst Phyllis Bennis says the conflict should be viewed in a larger historical perspective, including Israel’s punishing embargo that has worsened conditions in Gaza’s crowded refugee camps.

Instead, the U.S. news media has focused on Hamas’s recent launching of small rockets into southern Israel as the provocation for war, a time frame that helps create a public perception of Israel’s justification for the attacks that have claimed about 600 Palestinian lives, including many children and other civilians.

(The story summary continues below.)

Bennis, a senior analyst at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, cited various ways in which the United States has aided and abetted Israel's offensive, including both military and political support from Washington.
