The Fight for a Public Health Option

By TheRealNews.com
May 19, 2009

With a “single-payer” health insurance plan off the table in the U.S. Congress, the battle now centers on whether the insurance industry will succeed in killing even a public health plan as an option for Americans.

“The real battle that the American people and everybody listening should weigh in on, is whether or not the American reform is going to include the option of a public insurance plan,” says Roger Hickey, co-director of the Campaign for America’s Future.

(The story summary continues below.)

Hickey notes that “there is strong public support” for a public option, which was a cornerstone of candidate Barack Obama’s health care plan during the campaign, but there also is strong opposition to the concept from the insurance industry and its allies in the Senate.
