Rather than wait for President Barack Obama to lead the fight for a public health care option, some activists are working to build a national movement to battle the health insurance industry over its goal of forcing Americans to buy one of the private plans.
“I'm not going to sit and wait for Obama to fight for this thing [a public option],” said Roger Hickey, co-director of the Campaign For America's Future. “I'm organizing a movement to fight for this thing. So we can sit here and speculate about how strong Obama is going to be in the clutch. I hope he's strong. But the way to influence every politician is to get out there where the votes are.”

Obama promised a public insurance option during Campaign 2008, but strong resistance from Republicans, who label such a choice as “socialism,” and from the insurance industry, which makes substantial campaign contributions to members of both parties, has put the future of the public option in doubt.
